I can't tell you how amazingly fast this book moves! I've only read a couple of books that drop you right in the middle of a crisis, like Sam Rittenhouse. Many books can take you for a ride, but 12 Blackened Petals, by Brian M. Taylor, sets you behind the wheel of a roller derby vehicle- with no engine! You sit back, in your head gear, strapped in what's supposed to be s safety harness and endure crash after unbelievable crash! Because Sam is a wreak...
12 Blackened Petals is a story about the God's. Powerful deities that have a plan for the mere mortals of earth. They really don't seem to care about anything but themselves and it's proven in their plan, that Sam just happens to be a part of. It must have all been foretold, because there was no other way Sam would have trotted through the sewer systems to find the flower. But, when he gets a hold of it, all literal hell breaks loose- and he's at the apex of the storm!
There are a few points I want to make on this book. Most of them good and only one bad. First, the story is pretty cool. In my mind's eye, I was feeling/seeing a few things that really called to me. It reminded me of the anime classic, Akira. Have you seen that? It's an awesome movie by Katsuhiro Otomo. There was a lot of confusion and destruction for Sam. That's perfection, plus there was a reason for it. Just not a heavy explanation because... SPOILERS! I can't say why there wasn't a full-blown explanation because it's all part of the storyline.
Secondly, when Sam is told why things are happening the way they are, it's not too shabby. I'd have liked a bit more before the cliffhanger ending, but I can see why the author did it. It was worked very well and didn't disappoint. So, where in all this positivity could there be something negative? Not much... their are two issues I had with the story and they're small.
First, I'd have loved to have more of a description of the place Sam goes to (only a couple of times during the story)- and I can't say much more than that, because of SPOILERS, AND because I don't really know where he goes. It's like Hell, but instead of fire, there's a sticky... tarpit? Specified details are a big thing when it comes to other worlds. Then there's Malice. I really wanted to know what he looked like when he wasn't Sam, in this indescript world. There was a brief moment where a sketch was given, but it was so vague, I was sorta bummed- but it's okay. It didn't hurt the tale. Maybe more will come after Sam gets through the maze he was shown in the first chapter of the second book. Yup- we get to find out what happens after... I can't tell you!
If you like near non-stop action, 12 Blackened Petals is a really fun read. I'd have finished it sooner, but so much has been happening this week. You will finish it fast. It's that cool 📚
