Okay, I've never read a book like this. Ever! London Falling, by Paul Cornell, is paranormal + thriller + horror + witch craft! It's an interfusion of the unbelievable, using London (Yay!🇬🇧) as the backdrop. The story is about as abnormal as you can imagine- but it's so good!
The story begins like Law & Order UK, with a suspect confessing to his involvement in his mob-family business. Before he can give names, he starts to convulse, then his entire body explodes, leaving blood and gore everywhere! Boom.
This incident gets Operation Toto going with officers Quill, Costain, Sefton and Ross. It turns out, they're after a witch- one with a penchant for child sacrifices and football (the British version). The crew develops skills of a peculiar nature in order to go after the one who's causing so many deaths, but they really aren't trained for something of this nature! Or are they...
I don't care what's happening, if you drop me in the middle of London, I'm all over the story. It could be romance, paranormal, espionage- it doesn't matter. When I saw the title, I knew it belonged in my library. Not to mention the spooky cover. Is it really special? No, just spooky.
So, what can I say about this novel? It's great! I had to stop and use my Urban Dictionary more than a few times, but otherwise an easy read. I also had to use my common sense to realize things like a box cutter, here in the US is the same as a Stanley Knife. And I didn't realize folks in the UK thought Americans were so hooked on casual sex. Well,... maybe many of them are, but I didn't know that was a sort of US stigma. Yuck! But the story was amazing. I looked up a lot of places (I own a London Map Guide), so I could see what the characters were seeing, in order to understand the better. So because of my love of Britain, I adored every minute in the book. It held everything I loved!
The only thing I didn't seem to figure out, was, once Quill, Ross, Costain and Sefton managed to see what was happening around them and how they were all connected to the case, how did they explain it to their superiors? It was never truly explained how they were handling the cases, rescuing folks from a bubbling cauldron with blue flames- or even that their main suspect was dead! Strange... It was just suddenly known. Well, I won't say that, it's mentioned, but how it all came about still didn't make much sense to me.
Anyway, if you like a bit of mystery mixed in with your action, paranormal and so on, check out London Falling. It's amazing!! I'll be jumping into the rest of the series later- since I found out there was another book well after reading this on.📚
