When I received this book from the publishers, I wanted to dive right into the novel, but I had obligations. You see, I have to read my books in the order received. So I'd set it aside and admired the lovely cover. Well, I finally finished it this past summer, but here it finally is! Jessica Cluess beautiful novel, A Shadow Bright and Burning!
The world is no longer safe. There are things in the day, as well as night, that will devour a soul for the Ancient Ones. Only men, sorcerers, can protect the residents of London and surrounding areas. But there is a prophecy that tells of a girl who will rise up, gift with the power of fire, that will lead against the Ancient Ones- but is the world ready for a female sorcerer? Would the men of Victorian London be able to not only work with such a preposterous notion but also back such a campaign?
This story is about a young woman, of low birth, who wields such a magic, but there are obstacles. Monsters come in all shapes and sizes, and disguises.
Henrietta Howel is a character after my own heart. Written with as much realism as a fictional, magical character can be, I found myself drawn to her, caring and loving her. Not only her, but those who were to be her benefactors, friends and more. She had a tough time and the story carried it all- magical training, poverty, knowing your station, romance (that didn't ruin the storyline) and most of all, monsters!
Cluess wrote with a sort of webbing, where I saw nothing coming. What I thought was to happen didn't, but something greater occurred that blew me away. She wrote with a descriptive style that was truly Victorian and English and fabulous. I don't know anyone who could pick this book up and not find themselves captivated. A Shadow Bright and Burning is also book one of the Kingdom of Fire series. Book two, A Poison Dark and Drowning released September of this year. I'll be sure to read that one as well and share.
Until then, check out the quiet, yet mysterious book trailer and know that another is out there. Read it! I'm on to the next read, myself. Cheers!
