I've managed to meet many talented writers since I joined Instagram. Kendra McMahon is one of them. I lucked out and downloaded Binarius for free, from Amazon.com. I was looking for a fantasy tale but received an otherworldly experience. This story is unlike anything I've read before, leaving me to use my imagination in more ways than one.
The story, Binarius, is about Firinne, a young lady with Princess status, is trying to fight a force that's big enough to torment her planet! People are succumbing to a darkness that rules through emotion and deal with a betrayal she never saw coming. Forced to leave her home, she's on the run and has to find a way to stop The Blacken and save her people.
I really straddled the fence with this story; it was unique and very original. I liked Firinne, but I found her to be a bit slow. I saw her betrayal coming for some reason, but what I didn't see was the larger story's picture. The actions taking by the people of Fia and how the planet itself was being abused was more than unique. I found myself wanting to know more. There were but a few things that caused me a but of confusion in reading.
One of the issues (the biggest, actually) I had with Binarius, was the lack of explanation. I never truly understood The Blacken. I knew that it was a darkness that affected the emotions of the planet's people, but how was left a bit open, along with other happenings that were mentioned. I wished there was an appendix or glossary in the back of the book, to know what most of the incidents were. The faith wasn't explained either- I didn't understand what they worshipped. I was left to use my imagination, which was cool, but I just wished there was a bit of clarity.
I enjoyed the book and probably would have given it 3.5 stars, but I don't work in halvzies anymore.. Though much needed explaining, the story was created from scratch and I admire that. The people, planet and world was made in a way I never could. To be able to come out with not just a world, but everything that doesn't equate to my own world is exemplary! Mcmahan is a talented author who has a future in fantasy. Check it out. The link above will take you to a free ebook download (if still available). 📚
