I was gifted with the Instagram friendship of Ms. K. K. Allen a short while ago and I regret nothing. She's the sweetest and very talented. Her series, The Summer Solstice is sure to gain many followers and the book...
Number one, the cover is lovely. All the pieces come together- the mirror, Kat gazing at her alluring and beautiful reflection, like most YA characters. 😜 Then there are the things flying about... something I won't mention because: NO SPOILERS!
Okay, so Kat is an orphan. She and her mother were abandoned by her father when she was an infant and her mothers has just passed away, by a mysterious heart attack. She's swept away to the lavish town of Apollo Beach to live with her estranged grandmother, Rose. She feels odd, heartbroken and alone and her sixteenth birthday is around the corner.
But there are whispers of Kat and her family. Accusations that would normally chase people away. But the rumors, they're all true and Kat is about to find out the who's, what's, when's and why's- because it all affects her as of the Summer Solstice. When everything changes, and the truth surfaces...
Coming of age stories can sometimes meld into the same theme. A young and nerdy or boyishly cute and awkward girl bloom into unimaginable hotties and take on the world at sixteen or seventeen. They get the hottie opposite and run into a bit of peer-troubles, but endure to be popular, on top. That's not this book.
Kat has always been sheltered, and for good reason- which I will not divulge. But when she's sent to her grandmother, things are slowly explained- but not to the point of boredom. There's a steady pace to this book that I appreciated. The background information from both Kat and her grandmother, Rose is given in a way that you are intrigued, turning page after page until before you know it, it's all over! I liked that, very much, thank you. And the climactic rise before the cliffhanger... Priceless! Fun read- check it out in one of three forms: available as an audiobook on Audible.com and Amazon.com in both ebook and physical. Read it, love it, rate it!
