A Novel by Jane Harper
When I received this book, I was thrilled. It came in a small rucksack, bearing the book's title. Inside was a water bottle, the book, bookmarks, a small flashlight and a tasty bag of trail mix. It was so good, and honestly I ate them long before I read the book! LOL So was the book as good as the book swag?
Force of Nature, by Jane Harper, is one of those stories where you're bounced from the past (the original story) and the present, after the story took place. You're in two different times, reading what leads up to both the murder and the resolution of said murder.
It's about a murder during a work retreat in the Australian bush. It was supposed to be run of the mill team building, but someone disappears and assumed dead by many. Force Of Nature tells a lot of story, but for me- it wasn't enough for me to truly enjoy it.
The book gives you a lot of backstory, which to me was okay, but I wanted to simply know what happened! All the back and forth did for me was frustrate me, mostly because all it did was show a ton of what I already knew. Office politics suck and no one's your real friend- or close family, in the scheme of things! Everyone was so ugly... seriously! It made the book feel long, you know? And I don't know about anybody else, but I felt like there was no real resolution.
Falk, the main investigator of the story is over financial matter. Why is he dropped in the middle of all this? And the murder investigation took backseat to the telling of the story that gave no clues. I had nothing to try and figure out! What the heck, man!? Maybe it's because I didn't read The Dry, which is book one, of which I hadn't a clue it was a series novel. Could be...
All I can say is, right now I am not a fan. The story is nicely written, but it really wasn't all it had been hyped up to be. Still love my swag though!
