An Emotional Novel by Blu Zaas
Unlike any book I've ever read, He's Always Been Here took me on a journey into the life of an addict. The life of a person who needed love and support. The life of a person who knew no other way to traverse a cruel world without being harsh, cruel and heavily sedated on something that destroyed instead of helped, assisted, protected.
This is my review of a novel by Blu Zaas.
He's Always Been Here is about a woman named Shia, torn by her past, angry and filled with a snarkiness that would prick anyone nearby, she's decided to take her life back. To ditch addiction and rise from the ashes, as The Phoenix. It's hard, the struggle is real and she's not sure if things will work out when she comes across a man who's like no other. One who'd come from a similar past but different circumstances. But how could she deserve someone so strong, so amazing, so delicious! Can he change her world? Can she change his?
The first thing I thought of, once I saw the connection between the main characters, I thought: Isn't this against ALL the rules of recovery? Then I wondered if people really spoke this way- before remembering some of my own family members. He's Always Been Here is a slightly difficult book to read. No, I do not own virgin ears, but the way I read, I hear and see it all. These people are CRAZY! I did my best to relate, understand, sympathize- even empathize. They made it hard, but that's what characters do. It may have taken me a while to get through the novel, but I did and I appreciated it all.
If there's anything I couldn't really enjoy, it was the way faith came into play. I loved that God wasn't kept from such a serious life struggle but dang it if they didn't throw me for a loop! I can't say why, because it would offer up SPOILERS and you know I don't do that. Anyway, you'll have to read it to understand. I walked away from HABH with a sense of realism that I haven't experienced. It's not a simple read and put back on the shelf. You have to take something with you. I don't know what you'll gain, but my sense of reality has definitely been shifted.
Check out He's Always Been Here. Oh- I can tell you, the ending is rather nice. Still a lot of cursing and stuff, but I loved it. I'm off to the next read- cheers!
