*An Audiobook Review
Narrated by Steve Ember
With a story like this- no wonder other countries think American's are foolish! That's what I first thought while reading Paris Apartment for Rent by Peggy Kopman-Owens. The story of an expat, looking for himself in a foreign world, one not so accepting of him and his American habits. He learns, but while learning (through various mistakes), he becomes exposed to various secrets... and a lot of trouble!
Zack is on an adventure of a lifetime! Through his job, he's moved to Paris and living in a nice, but expensive hotel while seeking an apartment. His desire is to live in the prominent 6th Arrondissment. The area is prominent, having paths walked by the famous Ernest Hemingway and where Gertrude Stein had once lived. Just another item to mark from his bucket list, but he has trouble when he meets up with a lovely Frenchwoman who offers him a place with certain stipulations. First- he can not be himself, he has to be near invisible, and so much more. But there's also a mystery afoot! Can he figure it out and stay where he needs to stay- while getting his work in to his boss On Time? And what's with the strange comings and goings in the apartment across from his?
Paris Apartment for Rent is insane with French detail and culture. It is definitely a change from my usual reads. I'm not a Francophile, but I loved hearing about their activities and the areas about Zach while he made his way about the country's city.
Kopman-Owens wrote with expertise and care, making the story fun. I didn't find much about the story I didn't like, though I can say it was rather lengthy. There were tidbits that were unnecessary; diving in to so much of the other tenant's lives was much, but it just helped the story along. Zack managed to get himself into a lot of trouble, and knowing the people of the village, as well as his building, helped in keeping things in easy observance.
I liked Paris Apartment for Rent- check it out, along with Kopman-Owen's other mysteries on Amazon.com. I'm off to the next read!
