They said this was not a sequel...
I wanted this book because I'd read and reviewed The Girl With All the Gifts (January 12th, 2017) and I saw the movie later. I also read Fellside, making me sort of a fan of M. R. Carey? That being said, he's very gifted. Whether a graphic novel or a novel of the Hungry apocalypse, he tells a mean story, but was I a lover of this major tale...?
Though written wonderfully well, I must have missed what everyone else thought was so magnificent about this book. I was dreadfully bored and found it nothing like TGWATG. I was so disappointed by the storyline (the book is not a prequel nor sequel, according to author and publishing company), I didn't even keep it in my library; I got a refund.
So here are my specifics: There's practically no action. When there is a battle, it rises nowhere near the expectations after sifting through so many pages. The characters are flat, and for our main two characters to be bumping uglies- knowing the age difference? YUCK! Then there's McQueen... an angry, fiery commander of a man who likes to burn things up- he was the most ALIVE!
This should hopefully be the end of this saga. Don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing Carey- he's an awesome author. Just not with this book. I'm off to my next read. Cheers!
