by Gavin Whyte
Magical, mystical and mysterious, The Girl With the Green Tinted Hair, by Gavin Whyte, is a poetic story. It's written in a way that doesn't feel like a children's book. No, I don't think it is, but it is sweet. It's quite lovely... just not for kids.
The Girl With The Green Tinted Hair is about growing up. It shares innocence and innocent adoration. It's also about choices, life and growing up to believe and if we should believe. It's a short story of magically quiet times and how we can dive deep within ourselves- like I used to when I was younger. It's a gift I'd love to regain!
I don't know if it's a story I'd have read my son to sleep with (listed under children's book on Amazon), but I believe that if he read it today, he'd not like it. It was a bit repetitive and the coming and going of the seasons would have lost him. To me, it was like reading poetry. It was segmented, using particular times in the boys life, where questions were necessary and he needed a comfortable, reliable person to lean on. I can remember those times too.
The creepy part is that the story begins with a boy's infatuation with a girl. They become friends and he loves her. But when he returns, the girl is a young woman. She still loves him and he loves her- more than before. IS that not weird? Then when he finally returns, she's an old woman- still in love! What the wha? It felt creepy and pedo-ish, making me think something's terribly wrong.
Filled with imagery and song, The Girl With the Green Tinted Hair is a book I don't know if many would find appreciation. It's feels wrong, though written beautifully. You may or may not want to check it out, but I'm moving on to the next read!
