I love children's books, but I never get enough of them to review. So when I received an email on The Hairy Fairy, I was happy to take it. So what in the world does a kid and a fairy who lookalike he's related to a mountain man? I'll tell you!
The Hairy Fairy, by Mark Watson, is a story about a kid who's unlucky enough to wake with a crabby, hairy fairy on his head. Literally on his head. I don't know if there's any significance to him being on his head, but he is. Unfortunately, The Hairy Fairy can't do things right, so he's been exiled to some unfortunate child till he proves himself worthy of the title. Instead of properly granting wishes and displaying admirable behavior, he creates calamity- not just for the boy but for anyone in the vicinity!
The Hairy Fairy is a fun book, full of rhyme and adventure, even a war! But the story itself seems to carry a bit of mature matter. I was rather surprised when the fairy was found floating in the air, relaxed, sipping a mimosa. That's an alcoholic drink; why would it be in a kid's book? I don't know; I didn't like that. There were a couple other things I didn't think were appropriate, but as a whole, it's not too bad. The children won't catch what mommy and daddy read.
Grab yourself a copy of The Hairy Fairy from Amazon, like I did. I'm off to the next read. Cheers!
