New novel by Melissa Broder
I know, you're probably thinking- Alyssa's read a romance novel? Again? It's so totally not me, but when it's free and with a deadline I can handle, I'll try anything. This was one of those books that had me freaked out over the cover alone- it's gorgeous. But deep down, this book is... Let's just talk about The Pisces by Melissa Broder.
This book is porn. Straight up gross. Some of the things this character does and thinks and says are completely juvenile and nasty and disgusting and sex. Sex. SEX! That's all it's filled with! I forced myself to stomach as much as I could, up to chapter 21 before I realized I couldn't turn another page!
The Pisces is about Lucy, A woman who's in the midst of self-created chaos. She's supposed to be completing her dissertation on Sappho, but it's taken years and she's still not finished with it. She's dumped her boyfriend, who came back to her for a one-off, but she becomes violent when she finds he's seeing someone else.
She's selfish, lazy and what's a word worse than sarcastic? I don't know, contemptuous? I'm sure there's another but I don't use anything foul. Anyway, she's in such a bad way, her sister allows her to stay at her lake home, in turn she care for her diabetic dog. That's where she meets and falls a man is this nothing as he should be!
Let me begin by saying this book makes me angry to a certain degree. There are so many indie authors who get looked over because they didn't fall under the umbrella of some major publishing group/company. They write great fiction, non-fiction, etc. but can't get enough marketing and such behind them to go far. Where as this book has probably sold thousands upon thousands of copies and it's complete literary garbage!
Don't get me wrong, the writing is great! I love the voice but the voice comes from an imaginary person I could never get to know! She's terrible and the story is awful! It's just cursing, sex, totally gross conversations and so much more! I was so shocked by what takes place that I didn't even finish the book. I couldn't. It's distasteful- nothing I'd want to read or keep in my library. I'll be donating this one.
