What do you do when the hero of the story dies in the first freaking chapter? You and your mates go back to square one and begin again. That's exactly what takes place in Unchosen, by Jeffrey Cook and Katherine Perkins.
Unchosen is a fantastical tale concerning a war. There are things of all... nationalities involved, all over what has to be earth from my understanding. Right now things are taking place on what I believe is North America, but through magical portals, it can cut across to other continents as well. The thing is, the world's changed and it's not for the better and there's one
The crew is battling the evil Xharomor and his never-ending horde of minions. There are wizards chanting over mummies, trolls, and other things fighting to get inside the Horizone Academy- which is the school everyone is trying to defend and IT'S JUST UTTER CHAOS! But the story truly begins when the hero, the "Chosen One" gets killed off in like minutes! It's sorta funny!
As exciting as Unchosen is, I had a bit of trouble with the story. Because it begins so big, names of powers, locations and creatures are being tossed about like I already know who and what they are. It's very difficult to keep up with something when you've never heard of it a day in your life! I didn't know what to think often when the characters were debating on what their next moves were.
Two authors wrote Unchosen so it I was impressed at how I couldn't tell where one's chapter began and the other's ended. It was seamless storytelling and I found great appreciation in that. Sometimes you can see where one author was going over the other's if it's not written well. I did enjoy the story, but was slightly put off by not understanding all of it.
Various times a situation, process or name of a group was mentioned but there wasn't always enough detail to know what it was. It happened several times, leaving me confused. I wish the author's had added more, taking time to inform; I think that would have given it a boost in ratings from me. All in all though, I liked the adventure.
So if you're looking for a cool adventure, check out Unchosen. Cheers!
